K: I love the Zodiac Workout! How did you come up with the idea for it?

S: The Zodiac Workout was inspired by Zodiac Dance Workshops that I’ve been teaching in NYC since 2000. I was facilitating a woman’s 12 week workshop in a very intense windowless room in Chinatown. We were tapping into the Dark Goddess energy / shadow / rage energy that most women have swallowed as a result of the prevailing patriarchal prejudices. I had been inspired by Marion Woodman’s work and wanted to help women to get in body, to embody their blood, sweat
and tears. It was a very Reichian experience in that many woman started spontaneously breaking out in primal screams to accompany the movement. I realized they were screaming the screams for all women persecuted, beaten, raped, abandoned and dishonored for centuries. Those screams became my calling, and my work has never been the same. The workout DVD is a civilized and structured routine to help women get in body, and to start the process of working with a strong body to support authentic movement. But I thought it was important for people to know the depths of the roots from where Zodiac Dance was born. The workshops are considerably more intense and raw than the DVD because there is the safe container of the sacred circle, the presence of other women.

K: 2.The movements for each sign are so fluid. Did you take certain characteristics from each sign to create the workout or did you focus on the body parts associated with the signs?
